XLIII. La maison d'Auteuil

XLIII. The House at Auteuil

The French Chamber votes unanimously on the Anglo-French slave-trade convention, while Count Krosnowski stands trial for the attempted murder of his brother-in-law on the Boulevard de la Madeleine.

  • France's Chamber of Deputies adopted the Anglo-French slave-trade convention credit by 243 votes to 1, with Foreign Minister Guizot declaring France had recovered full independence of its flag.
  • In London, MP William Hutt argued before a near-empty House of Commons — only 29 members present — that Britain's anti-slave-trade cruisers had failed utterly, with 35,000 slaves still imported annually into Brazil and Cuba.
  • A Spanish moderate faction meeting of 31 deputies in Madrid rejected both the Carlist pretender's son and the Count of Trapani as candidates for Queen Isabella II's hand, calling any marriage decision premature.
  • In Volhynia, Hasidic Jews rioted against a tsar's decree requiring them to cut their traditional ringlets; two young men died in the violence, and fifteen Chasidim were dispatched to Siberia — their ringlets the first thing shorn before departure.
  • The Chamber of Deputies voted by just 137 to 132 to require all Legion of Honour nominations to be published in the Moniteur, after defeating a broader amendment that would also have required stated reasons for each award.
  • Polish exile Count Krosnowski, 46, stood trial at the Seine Assizes for firing two pistols at his brother-in-law Paul Hervé on the Boulevard de la Madeleine; 64 witnesses were cited and the hearing drew a crowd so large that ushers struggled to clear benches for the barristers.
  • A Paris court dissolved the legitimist Œuvre de Saint-Louis and fined its leaders — including the Duc des Cars and Prince de Montmorency-Robecq — finding it had used charity as cover to subsidise supporters of the former Bourbon dynasty, including Vendée rebels.
  • MM. Firmin Didot published volumes IV and V of Ducange's monumental Glossarium mediæ et infimæ latinitatis, enriched with previously unknown medieval coins supplied by numismatist Félicien de Saulcy from the Royal Library's originals.
